The harbour and old town
Kyrenia's old harbour is the town's centrepiece — a horseshoe-shaped quay lined with seafood restaurants and wooden fishing boats. In the evenings it fills with diners and the atmosphere is relaxed and easy. The harbour is walkable from most central hotels.
Kyrenia Castle
The castle guards the harbour entrance and houses the Shipwreck Museum, which contains one of the oldest recovered ship hulls in the world. Entry is straightforward and the views from the battlements over the harbour are excellent.
Bellapais and the mountains
The village of Bellapais, about ten minutes from Kyrenia by road, is home to a Gothic abbey with a well-preserved cloister. The mountain range behind Kyrenia offers walking routes with sea views and cooler temperatures in summer.
Day trips from Kyrenia
Famagusta is around 90 minutes east and worth a full day for its walled city and ruins. Nicosia is about 40 minutes south. The Karpaz Peninsula makes a good longer day trip for those who want wild beaches and open landscape.
