Entry requirements for North Cyprus

North Cyprus entry requirements are a common source of confusion for UK travellers, and most of that confusion comes from one thing: the island has two entry regimes, and which applies to you depends on where you land.

The question has two answers

This page explains the shape of the question rather than giving you a single rule, and that is deliberate. Entry arrangements are set by authorities, not by travel agencies, and they change. An out-of-date claim on a page like this is the kind of thing that leaves someone stuck at a border, so we would rather tell you exactly what to check and with whom.

What is stable is the structure. The island has two separate entry regimes. Arriving at Ercan in the north puts you under one of them; arriving at Larnaca or Paphos in the south puts you under the other. If you are crossing between the two sides during your stay, both are relevant to you.

Where are you landing?

Work this out first, because it determines everything else. If you are flying via Türkiye to Ercan, you are entering in the north. If you are flying direct to Larnaca and travelling up by road, you are entering in the south and then crossing. Our routing guide explains both journeys.

Confirm the current requirements for whichever applies to you with the relevant authority, and with your airline, before you book. Your airline will not board you without whatever documentation the route requires, so they are a reliable practical check.

Passport validity

Check the expiry date on your passport before you book, not the week before you fly. Many destinations require a period of validity remaining beyond your return date, and renewals take time. This is the single most common avoidable problem we see, and it has nothing to do with which side of the island you are visiting.

Travel insurance — check your own policy

This one is specific to this destination and worth ten minutes of your time. Some travel insurance policies treat the north of the island differently from the south, and a few exclude it. Others cover it without comment.

We cannot tell you what your policy covers and we are not going to guess. Read your own wording, or ring the insurer and ask them directly about the north of the island. If you are buying a new policy, ask before you buy rather than after.

The same applies to any hire car. Cover taken out in the south generally does not extend to driving north.

What to confirm before you book

  • Which airport you are landing at, and therefore which entry regime applies.
  • The current entry requirements for that route, confirmed with the relevant authority or your airline.
  • Your passport expiry date, with enough margin.
  • Your travel insurance wording as it applies to the north of the island.
  • Hire car cover, if you plan to drive across.

How we can help

We are in Kyrenia and we deal with arriving guests constantly, so if something on the above list is unclear we are happy to talk it through — with the caveat that we will point you at the authority rather than invent an answer. Get in touch, or start with North Cyprus holidays from the UK.

Questions and answers

Do UK travellers need a visa for North Cyprus?

Requirements are set by the authorities and change, so confirm the current position for your route before booking. What is stable is that the island has two entry regimes and which applies depends on whether you land in the north or the south.

Why does this page not simply state the requirement?

Because entry rules change and an out-of-date claim could leave you stranded at a border. We would rather tell you precisely what to check and who to check it with.

Does my travel insurance cover North Cyprus?

Some policies treat the north of the island differently from the south and a few exclude it. Read your own policy wording or ask the insurer directly — this is worth doing before you buy.

How much passport validity do I need?

Check your expiry date well before booking rather than before flying, as many destinations require validity beyond your return date and renewals take time.

Does it matter which airport I fly into?

Yes, and it is the first thing to establish. Landing at Ercan and landing at Larnaca put you under different entry regimes.
