North Cyprus from Birmingham

Travelling to North Cyprus from Birmingham is well served on both routes, which makes the Midlands one of the easier parts of the country to plan this trip from — as long as you weigh the drive as carefully as the fare.

Getting to North Cyprus from Birmingham

Birmingham offers both ways of reaching the island from a single airport. There are connections towards Ercan through a Turkish hub, and there is a direct service to Larnaca in the south. Not many UK airports outside London give you both without a drive first.

Landing at Ercan puts you inside North Cyprus with a short transfer to Kyrenia at the end. Landing at Larnaca means a direct flight but a longer road journey north and a border crossing. If you are hiring a car in the south, check the cover before you book — it generally does not extend to driving north. Our routing guide sets both out.

Both routes, one airport

Birmingham's real planning question is not which route but whether to use Birmingham at all, and this is where the Midlands differs from everywhere else in the country. The catchment overlaps heavily with East Midlands and, to the south west, with Bristol. For a lot of travellers, two or three airports are within a plausible drive.

Our advice is unglamorous but it saves people money: price the whole journey. A cheaper fare from an airport ninety minutes further away stops being cheaper once you have added fuel, parking for a fortnight and an earlier start. Equally, if your dates are fixed and Birmingham has nothing sensible on them, the drive may well be worth it. Work it out rather than assuming either way.

When to go from Birmingham

The Midlands runs on the English school holiday calendar, and those weeks are the busiest and dearest. If your dates are flexible, the fortnight either side of a school holiday is usually noticeably better value with almost identical weather. Late spring and early autumn are the sweet spot on the island generally.

Where you will stay

Good to know

Questions and answers

Can you fly to North Cyprus from Birmingham?

Birmingham offers both routes from one airport: connections towards Ercan through a Turkish hub, and a direct service to Larnaca in the south for travellers happy to cross by road.

Should I drive to another airport instead?

Price the whole journey before deciding. A cheaper fare from an airport further away often stops being cheaper once fuel, a fortnight's parking and an earlier start are added — but if Birmingham has nothing on your dates, the drive can be worth it.

Which route should I take from Birmingham?

Ercan if you want to reach the hotel quickly and do not mind a connection. Larnaca if you would rather have a direct flight and accept a longer road journey and a border crossing.

When is the best time to travel from the Midlands?

Outside the English school holidays. The fortnight either side gives much better value with near-identical weather.

Can I hire a car and drive north from Larnaca?

Check the policy wording first. Cover taken out in the south generally does not extend to driving north, and it is easy to miss in the rental agreement.
